Online dating is becoming an increasingly popular way to meet new people and find a potential partner. However, while a lot of people have been lucky to find true love through dating websites, some aren’t that fortunate. Some even don’t get any replies at all. Yes, it is frustrating. In fact, it could be one of the most frustrating experiences anyone could have in internet dating. Caught in this dilemma and wondering why you’re also not getting any replies? Here are some of the most common reasons why.

You’re using the wrong approach

There’s no secret formula to writing a message that will appeal to those you are trying to connect with. And there’s really no need for that. Dating is not an exact science anyway. All you have to do is to assess your approach and make sure you’re using the right one.

When trying to start a conversation, avoid the usual “how are you?” It’s not even a conversation starter. Asking this question is most likely not going to give you a reply. Try a different approach. Read through the profile of the person you want to send a message to and pick something interesting. Use this specific topic when you send them a message or when you ask them a question. You may also include certain aspects that caught your eye and tell them the reason why. The more personalized your approach is, the better chances of getting a response.

You don’t have a picture on your profile

You’re most likely not going to get a reply when people can’t tell what you look like. There always has to be a face attached to a name. Whether we like to admit it or not, people who engage in internet dating are more likely to respond to the messages of those who they find physically attractive based on profile pictures. Sometimes, one photo is not even enough. You may need to upload a couple more and make sure that your face is clear and visible. Don’t keep people guessing what you look like.

You don’t look happy in your photos

Putting your photos on your profile is one thing. But making sure they look attractive is another. Being attractive doesn’t mean that you have to be the prettiest girl or the most handsome guy in your photo. Just choose a photo where you look happy and confident. Sad looking or serious looking photos might make people think you’re not approachable and friendly. Give them a happy looking face with a genuine smile. That’s going to make it a lot better.

You don’t have patience

It’s true what they say: good things come to those who wait. Don’t show people that you are desperately waiting for their reply. It’s going to give them the wrong impression. Don’t message anyone again and again. One message should be enough.

You’re using a photo with another man or woman

If you’re looking for a potential date, being with another man or woman in your photo is a  big no-no, even if you’re only friends. This will make people think that you’re no longer available. A photo with a group of friends is okay. But not a photo where there’s only you and the guy/girl.

You’re compromising the conversation with physical comments

Mentioning how someone looks or giving physical compliments on your first message is not the way to do it. It might sound strange, but even if people love to hear that they are appreciated, receiving it the first time from a stranger might feel creepy. So if you want to give someone a compliment, be careful with your choice of words. Get away with the words that describe someone’s physical attributes. Instead, go for the safer ones like “awesome” or “cool” or “interesting”.

Your first message is lengthy

The general rule of thumb when sending a message to someone in dating websites is that you have to keep it short, sweet and simple. A lengthy message may overwhelm the reader. Writing a long message may also make them feel that you’re coming on too strong.

Online dating can be tricky and nerve-wracking. Follow these tips to increase your odds of getting the response you’ve long been waiting for.
